I had a lot of fun playing this game, even more so because I lost.

Brad played his Cabaretti deck masterfully, and also luckily, he got so many great cards, like a turn 3 Scute Swarm. Neither Michael nor I had a response or removal for it, by the time I did it was too late, it had multiplied.

But oh my god! I had some great turns with my ninjutsu deck. I had Dimir Keyrune and Ingenius Prodigy  out early game allowing me to ninja out Starwinder on turn 4 against Michael. I drew Unstoppable Slasher in those 7 cards and ninja’d him out on turn 5 against Brad. Brad now had the lowest health. I attacked Michael with Starwinder on turn 5, also, but Michael exiled it with Utter End.

Michael’s commander, Breena, the Demagogue was the only flyer out for much of the game, so he was able to attack us freely. The first time he hit me was for 1 commander damage. The second time he hit me was for 9 commander damage. Now, if he wants his commander to trigger, he’s got to come after me and he just exiled my only flyer on the board. He’s going to kill me with commander damage if he has another turn. And then he cast Stalking Leonine, which of course he secretly chooses me to prevent me from attacking him.

On my turn I cast Rona’s Vortex on Michael’s Leonine and then Diabolic Tutor for Blightsteel Colossus. I attack Michael with the 0/1 Prodigy with skulk and ninja Colossus to the battlefield, taking Michael out of the game with poison counters on turn 6. But now I’m tapped out, I can’t get my Prodigy back on the battlefield, the Keyrune is in the graveyard because I had to discard down to seven after the Starwinder came out. Grazilaxx, Illithid Scholar was in the graveyard too because of that, I really needed that to get Colossus back in my hand.

Brad spent turn 6 making more insect tokens and citizen tokens. He didn’t look scary yet, but he blocked my attack on turn 7 with enough creatures to prevent Colossus from outright killing him, but still taking 8 poison counters. Now Brad’s swarm is making copies of itself. And on turn 7 he started to look really scary. He cast Boss’s Chauffer and it came out with ten +1/+1 counters on it, he played a land for turn, made another 10 Swarms and put another ten +1/+1 counters on the Chauffer.

Now he can block my Colossus with out worry. I spend turn 8 building up my defenses, I should have cast Soul Transfer then and got Grazilaxx back, but I kept hoping for an enchantment card so I could choose both options and remove the +20/+20 Chauffer. Brad spends turn 8 getting even scarier.

On turn 9 I finally read all of Soul Transfer (the real reason I didn’t think to get Grazilaxx back earlier) and see what the second option is. I get Grazilaxx back in to my hand and get him on the battlefield. But it’s too late, I don’t think I can do anything to stop Brad from killing me on his turn. I’m so tempted to say “good game” and move on to the next match of the night, but I don’t. I want to see what Brad’s gonna do. And, if he doesn’t attack me like he hasn’t been (weird sentence), I can get the win on my next turn.

Nope.

Brad started off turn 9 with Shamanic Revelation and drew 48 cards! It took him a while to go through them all to find the best cards. I thought he only had 5 mana available remaining now, so I used Ertai’s Scorn to counter Brad’s Scepter of Celebration, which would have given his +48/+48 Chauffer trample. I thought I was so clever, he’s only got 2 mana, he can’t do anything really bad with that. I forgot that he had Prosperous Partnership on the battlefield and he was able to use all his newly summoned swarm tokens to make a bunch of treasure tokens. He then cast Vivien’s Stampede giving all his creatures vigilance, trample and melee. It was masterfully played.
